  • Artificial Sweeteners

A 2017 study * found that over 41% of U.S. adults and 21% of US children consume artificial sweeteners in an array of commercial prepared "foods". The FDA has approved six high-intensity sweeteners. Saccharin, discovered and used in 1879, before the current food additive approval process came into effect in 1958. Brand names include Sweet‘N Low Aspartame, approved for use in 1981. Brand names include Equal Acesulfame potassium (Ace-K), approved for use in 1988. Brand name includes Sweet One Sucralose, approved for use in 1998. Brand name is Splenda Neotame, approved for use in 2002. Brand name is Newtame Advantame, approved for use in 2014. The FDA refer to these as ‘high-intensity’ because small amounts pack a large punch when it comes to sweetness. Unlike sweeteners such as sugar, honey, or molasses, high-intensity sweeteners add few or no calories to the foods they flavor. Also, high-intensity sweeteners generally do not raise blood sugar levels....but, what do they do? A new study from Florida State University shows Aspartame is linked to anxiety and epigenetic changes in the brain (simply put, how your genes work) and could persist for up to two subsequent generations. The study appears in the journal PANS. Yet, another study found that the use of artificial sugars increased cancer in general. In the abstract, * The Potential Toxicity of Artificial Sweeteners by Christina R. Whitehouse, BSN, RN, Joseph Boullata, PharmD, RPh, BCNSP, and Linda A. McCauley, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAAOHN, it is stated; The use of artificial sweeteners remains controversial. Their consumption has been shown to cause mild to serious side effects ranging from nuisance headaches to potentially life-threatening cancer. Recent reports of selected sweeteners suggest they are not efficacious in weight loss and may promote weight gain (Swithers & Davidson, 2008). Much literature is available on artificial sweeteners; however, it is difficult for the general public to decipher the research, especially when researchers themselves disagree. Why Artificial Sweeteners? Less calorie consumption has been part of the spawned use of artificial sweeteners. But isn't there a better way? Yes, there is. A focus on an intake of highly nutritious whole foods and daily activity is foundational. These will absolutely assist you in good health while using artificial sweeteners can only harm. This is just a small amount of information compared to the vast amount available regarding artificial sweeteners, however, there is enough here and I am sure you would agree, that artificial sugar is not something you want to put into your body; not if you are pursuing good health. • Why Does Some Fingernail Polish Stink?

Have you ever considered that anything you put on your skin has the ability to be absorbed into your blood stream? This includes nail polish. Even though there is a fingernail between the polish and the skin, our nails are porous and the chemicals in the fingernail polish can go right through and end up in your blood stream! In addition, those noxious odors; our lungs are absorbing them like a sponge! Not good! Formaldehyde, Toluene, and Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Xylene and plasticizers. These are toxins that are well documented to harm our bodies! These are the worst of the worst, but there's more! This list of chemicals is not complete, there are others. This is some of the health consequences caused by these chemicals, just some... Cancer Developmental/reproductive toxicity Allergies/immunotoxicity Non-reproductive organ system toxicity Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs) Persistence and bioaccumulation A PAPER published in June of 2022 stated “Inhalation exposure, at high levels, of dibutyl phthalate may include irritation of the eyes, nose and throat. It may cause nausea, tearing of the eyes, vomiting, dizziness, and headache. Long-term exposures may cause liver and kidney damage. Dibutyl phthalate may harm the developing fetus and the male testes.” I would say this is why fingernail polish can stink. Cosmetics and personal care products are not required to be tested for safety before being allowed on the market, even though they may contain chemicals that harm you. Chemicals that can give you disease, chemicals that can alter your reproductive health! And, what about when you have to remove it? Please, use acetone free polish remover. There has been companies that have eliminated their use of formaldehyde, toluene and DBP from their formulas, however, not necessarily harmless as they may still contain plasticizers. You will have to use due diligence in reading the labels and looking into their formula ingredients. Just recently, news has come out regarding SNS Nails dip powder. There’s reason to believe that SNS Nails’ dip powder products, which are advertised as “natural,” “healthy,” and “non-toxic,” contain toxic chemicals. Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are investigating whether a class action can be filed against SNS Nails over possible false advertising. There are some low hazard brands At the same time, however, there are companies producing low hazard fingernail polishes! These companies should be commended, because they care and have proven it by omitting many of the chemicals that are detrimental to our health. Polishing your fingernails can be fun! It can be a fun way to express yourself or dress up your outfit! Below is a brand example of fingernail polish that has low toxicity and that you might like to try! I will keep you updated on more brands in the future. So, you can still polish your fingernails and your toenails, just please, consider your health when you do. Ella Mila Professional is another brand that is low in toxicity. Ogee has clean cosmetics and also fingernail polish plus you can get 10% off of your first order! References [1] OSHA, OSHA Infosheet. • Silken Up With Safflower Oil

A wonderful natural remedy for dry chapped skin is safflower oil. With safflower oil being less saturated then olive oil, safflower oil is healthy and will absorb into the skin. It contains essential fatty acids that can smooth the skin and help skin hold onto moisture better. Safflower oil actually shares similarities with the naturally occurring lipid components of the human skin and it doesn't cause blocked pores, leading to breakout. To apply safflower oil, simply pour it into your hands and apply to your body, head to toe. The best time to do this is directly after a warm bath or shower and while your skin is still damp. The only caveat here, and it's not so bad; you will need to put on old pajamas and socks to keep the oil from staining your sheets. You can find Organic Safflower Oil at Mountain Rose Herbs. Massage this mixture into the scalp and let sit for a while, 10 to 20 minutes is good. Wash as usual. Why the additional Lavender essential oil? • Release Some Nitric Oxide

Nitric Oxide is a molecule that our body naturally produces. It has several functions in our body , one very important function is vasodilation (relaxing the inner muscles of the blood vessels). Vasodilation causes your blood vessels to widen and increases circulation, allowing the oxygen and nutrients in our blood to reach all parts of our bodies effectively. Eat Your Vegetables You can increase nitric oxide by eating organic vegetables high in nitrates. (This is not to be confused with sodium nitrates used as a preservative in processed meats.) The nitrates in vegetables are converted to nitric oxide. Celery, lettuce, arugula, beets, spinach and garlic are all good sources. Nitric Oxide degrades quickly, once in the bloodstream, however, it rebuilds every couple of hours. Increasing your intake of antioxidants stabilizes and limits it's breakdown. Increasing your antioxidant intake of vitamin C, E, Glutathione and polyphenols is helpful. As well, the mentioned vegetables also contain antioxidants. Get That Blood Flowing Exercise gets your blood flowing because it improves the function of the cells lining your blood vessels (endophelia). These cells store and produce nitric oxide, keeping your blood vessels healthy ( A dysfunction here can lead to disease). The nitric oxide released with exercise also increases oxygen and nutrients to your muscles and contributes to muscle rebuild. This 4 minute workout with Dr. Zach Bush will get the nitric oxide going and get your blood flowing throughout your entire body. if you are limited in your movement take it slow and do just what you can. Did you know, that nitric oxide also can… Improve blood flow and blood pressure Act as an uber neurotransmitter in your nervous system and organs Aid with memory and behavior Reduce inflammation Help repair damaged tissue Improve sleep quality Increase endurance and strength Assist with gastric motility Trigger white blood cells to fight infection Help prevent disease, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes (Note:This post contains affiliate links)

  • Give Your Gut Some TLC

Did you know; if the gut isn't healthy you won't be healthy? The digestive system is directly responsible for keeping your immune system healthy and strong. If the process of absorption is disrupted you can not benefit completely from your nutrient intake. If your nutrient intake is interrupted, you have something missing that your body needs! Then, there is Leaky Gut Syndrome. A common occurrence today. The topic of Leaky Gut Syndrome will certainly be in future posts. For now, here, I focus on helping you give your gut some tender loving care. What Can You Do For Your Gut? Chew your food well. Chewing is one of the first processes of digestion. Chewing produces enzymes needed for digestion. If you don't already, then chew, chew, chew. Stop eating chemicals and processed foods. Have you read the words on the labels? Just as one example; why would you want to eat butylated hydroxyanisole or BHA for short ? What does your body do with that? I shutter to think about it! Chemical laden junk food is hard on the stomach and will irritate the lining, causing inflammation. Besides, processed foods have been stripped of nutrients, so what good are they? Processed foods like white bleached flour, hydrogenated oils and white sugar not only inflames the gut but can cause food allergies, causing further inflammation. Eat as close to nature as possible. Eating this way gives your body what it needs to live. How could anyone not want that? Eating close to nature not only provides you with needed nutrition, it feeds your gut microbiome. Fresh cabbage juice is excellent and has been indicated as healing ulcers! Bone broth is extremely healing and is an ultimate nutritional support for your gut. Depending on your circumstance you may have to give a few things up, besides the junk food. Liquids that cause your stomach to produce higher amounts of acid are problematic and the top culprits are coffee, soda pop, and alcohol. If you already have symptoms it would be extremely beneficial to stop these. At least consider reducing your coffee to 2 cups a day. Would you pour acid or alcohol on an open cut? NO! So why would you drink acid and alcohol on an inflamed stomach? Once your symptoms are gone it will be fine to drink coffee in moderation, organic, of course. If you do consume some alcohol, such as at an occasional special event, always drink 12 ounces of water for each drink. Drinking the water will prevent dehydration and help flush out the toxins. You might consider discontinuing certain over the counter medications, like aspirin, Aleve, Advil and Motrin. All of these can cause GI burning, nausea, diarrhea, cramps, gas, bloating and even bleeding. Of course when it comes to prescription medications you should discuss that with your doctor. Discontinue artificial sweeteners. Lot's of problems here...(a future post). Artificial sweeteners will prevent healing of the gut. Use honey, maple syrup, yinnie rice syrup, stevia or one of many natural sweeteners. Cane Sugar, organic and unbleached is way, way, way better! You could possibly have food allergies. Dairy, gluten and eggs can be common . If your nose runs while eating or your stomach hurts after eating; you are probably at least sensitive to the food if not down right allergic. You need to stop consuming that food, at least for now. (More on food allergies in the future). Stay hydrated. Drink a glass of water upon waking in the morning and then continue through out the day. Water assists in flushing out our toxic metabolites and benefits the microbiome and mucosal lining of the gut Last but not least is the fact that our gut and brain is so connected that it has been said that our gut is our second brain. What happens to your stomach when you focus on a negative thought or your stressing about something? You probably find that you can't eat, or you feel like you need to use the restroom, or you just have a weird feeling in your gut. Did you know the microbiome in our gut communicates to our brains and visa - versa? If your brain is upset your stomach will follow. Interestingly, our gut produces 90% of our serotonin and 50% of our dopamine. It is actually the gut that produces all our neurotransmitters! This means if your giving your gut some TLC you will being doing it for your brain as well. This is where exercise and meditation come in, both will decompress your mind and stabilize your mood, resulting in happier micorbiome. There are supporting herbs like ginger and peppermint and supplements that can aid a symptomatic gut and give you some relief. In fact, a simple practice of chewing on Fennel sees after a meal may give you some relief when needed. Below you'll find a list of some supplements and herbs that are well known to aid in gas, bloating, cramping and healing. These will support your gut. Probiotics: L-Glutamine Fennel Tea Ginger Tea Peppermint Tea Yeast Fighter: Kyolic Deglycyrrhized licorice (DGL) Fennel Seeds
